What skills do you need to be a rower?

What age do you need to be to take up rowing?
Rowing is a sport for all ages and sizes. Crews need a coxswain to steer some boats so being smaller is an advantage. Every new rower is different so age doesn’t matter too much but being able to swim and confident around water is helpful.
How hard is it to learn to row?
It is a learnt skill and people pick it up at their own pace. Although challenging at first, once the skill is learnt, it’s a skill for life.
Do I have to go to regattas or can I just come down and row?
The club has a range of on water options . From social rowing to competing at Club, State and National Championships, there is something for everyone.
How do I become part of a crew?
Just turn up. Most new rowers turn up on their own and crews get formed. And it’s a great way to meet people.
How much does it cost?
Membership fees are set each year. For the 2025/2026 season, it costs $180 for an adult, $90 for a junior (up to the end of school) and $110 for a university student. For that, you get access to great coaching, great boats and a well equiped gym. Social members are also welcome at $30, but don’t get access to the boats or the gym but can be involved in supporting the rowers and the club’s social life!
